Regular visitors to The Balti Guide may be aware that our current rated number one restaurant is Ghurka in Droitwich. Droitwich being a bit of a drive means it's not ideal to be visiting this place on a regular basis so when we learnt that a new Indian restaurant in Bromsgrove, (half the distance away) opening called Ghurka imprerial dining we was delighted.
We reached out to the Ghurka to ask if the new restaurant was a new venture and related to Droitwich in any way. I was assured that the Ghurka imperial Dining in Bromsgrove has absolutely nothing to do with the Ghurka restaurant in Droitwich and was a completely new management and a new chef.
With an open mind I booked a table for a busy Saturday evening for 4 of us and headed off to Bromsgrove to try out this new Ghurka Nepalese restaurant.
It's difficult to miss with a huge new sign above the restaurant and has some parking located a few yards away in the gym car park. I got the last space so was happy I managed to get a space.
With two taps of Cobra on the bar I was looking forward for a cold Cobra but was informed the draught lager is not available. The next best beer is traditional Ghurka Lager which is available in large bottles.
The decor of the restaurant had me thinking I'd walked into the Ghurka in Droitwich. Even the uniforms were quite similar but a different colour although only 1 maybe 2 members of staff was actually wearing a uniform. The others were a miss match.
We started with some popular dishes. Onion Bhaji and Chicken momo. The bhaji was good in flavour but unusually tough in places to cut through. No consistency and a touch rubbery in places. The chicken momo was again nice in flavour but the dumpling was twisted on the top which was quite big and meant it wasn't fully cooked in this area so left a soggy dumpling dough taste. The inside was nice though.
Mains we had 2 x murgh Labadar, chicken curry and a chicken balti.
The labadar was rich and sweet with a good bbq flavour. A great effort and a nice dish. The ghurka curry was also very good. I personally did not try the balti but was told it was an average standard balti.
Final Thoughts
One of the things I marked the Ghurka Imperial dining down for was the space inside the restaurant. In my opinion they have crammed tables to close together.
We sat for and listened to the conversation on the next table whether we wanted to or not because it was literally 40cm away. Personal space is not an option in here and personally I like to have a little more sprivacy and a little more distance between myself and other diners when I'm eating out.
Overall the meal wasn't bad. It wasn't the lowest priced Indian around at £130 for 4 people but the main courses was nice. It's ashame they dont give you a little more room inside or I would have gone back at some point in the future.
The similarities between here and Droitwich Ghurka are plain to see whats going on here.
If you have been to both restaurants I will let you decide for yourself.
