A recent visit to Meriden and a shopping trip into Solihull meant we required some good food to follow up on a busy day.
A quick search online and I found that the latest hot recommended restaurant on trip advisor for Solihull was this place called Lavang.
Having checked out the reviews I was lucky to be visiting Solihull on a Sunday as I can imagine Friday / Saturday evenings will require a booking several weeks in advance.
Before we get into the main course (no pun intended) lets just talk a little about the restaurant and the area.
Located off the main road Lavang offers plenty of parking spaces. I imagine early evening when other businesses are open it may become busy. Lavang is easy to spot from the main road when driving past.
We was unsure about the license sitaution. and on arrival we noticed other customers taking in some drinks so assumed the restaurant is a byod.
We noticed over the road was an off license (Michaels), so headed over for some drinks. The guy that served us confirmed Lavang was unlicensed and also sang the praises. He was a guenuinely nice guy so if you're local and heading out or in need of a beer then get yourself to Michaels.
By the time we arrived at Lavang we were a couple of minutes late and even though we booked one of the first tables available there was already 4 other tables already seated and placing orders. For 5.30 on a Sunday evening I was surprised.
We ordered the aloo bora starter along with the honey glazed lamb chops. Lavang advertise 2 different lamb chops and I was undecided on which to go for. Our server recommended the honey glazed so I went for them.
The aloo bora arrived a little different from the pictures i'd seen. It was not as neatly placed but the was good and bursting with flavour. The lamb chops for me was quite small and the honey glaze overpowered the lamb. Although very sweet and quite tasty I was left wishing I'd gone with the Nihari lamb chops.
Lavang solihull have the dry ice show to perfection. The table next to us had a mixed grill and the dry ice display was show stopping and grabbed everyones attention.
I ordered the dhaniya roshanwala for my main with some rice. Having had a starter and some papadoms I didn't want to over do the food so kept it simple wth a plain naan to go with it.
We also experienced the dry ice at our table (see image above). All food was served fresh and hot. My main was tasty and full of flavour, not as hot as I was expecting as it is advertised as a slightly hot dish. Overall the food was really good.
Final Thoughts
Lavang is quite a small restaurant and although the atmosphere is good and the friendly service makes up for some of it I can't help feeling the way the tables are crammed in for me loses some appeal.
Lavang have the service and the food bang on and I will 100% be back in the future to try the mixed grill that looked so good.
Lavang loses some marks for me purely down to the closeness of tables and customers don't seem to have much personal space.
I would however recommend Lavang to anyone wanting to up there curry game.
